  • Over one-third of Canadian children aged 2 to 11 were overweight in 1998/99.
  • The most overweight children were those who reported low levels of vigorous activity and high levels of television watching.
  • 33% of 7 to 13 year old males in Canada are overweight; an additional 10% are considered obese.
  • 28% and 9% of young females in Canada are overweight and obese respectively.
  • Over half of 5 to 17 year olds in Canada are not active enough for optimal growth and development.
  • Due to the high incidence of obesity, children as young as eight years of age are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
